- Take pictures of passport, residence cards, and ids and take a copy to US and leave a copy in Japan
- Pack Yatzhee sheets to play with daughter online
To Do (in Tennessee)¶
- Buy a car
- Inspect apartments
- Job interviews
- Research finance and programming jobs in Japan
- Get local phone number (Can I accept calls from Tennessee? (Sim card with Tennessee number?))
- File I-865 (Notice of change of Sponsor's Address within 30 days)
- Apply for Japanese pension reimbursement
- The Consular Report of Birth Abroad is not a birth certificate per se but serves many of the same functions as a birth certificate. For example, it can be used for entry into school or employment
Japanese Visa¶
Leaving Japan¶
City Hall Requirement¶
Separate from immigration, you should:
- File a moving-out notification (転出届 / tenshutsu todoke) at your local city/ward office before leaving Japan.
This:
- Removes you from the resident registry
- Stops national health insurance
- Stops local tax obligations going forward
Immigration and city hall are separate systems — many people forget this step.
When you leave Japan¶
At the airport:
- Go through normal departure immigration
- Do NOT check the “Special Re-entry Permit” box on the departure card
- Your residence status is cancelled upon departure
- Hand over your residence card to the immigration officer
- They will process your departure and cancel your residence status
That’s it. No prior visit to an immigration office required.
Re-entry into Japan¶
- You can enter Japan visa-free under the Temporary Visitor status for up to 90 days per visit. You’ll enter as a tourist just like any other visitor.
Returning to Stay in Japan Long-term¶
- If you ever decide to move back long-term, you would apply again for a new Spouse of Japanese National visa at a Japanese consulate abroad.
Visiting as a Tourist¶
As a tourist:
- You cannot work
- You cannot enroll in Japanese national health insurance
- You cannot open long-term contracts (phone, apartment, etc.)
- You are not considered a resident for tax purposes
